Once Human doesn’t hold your hand for long. Within an hour you’re juggling hunger, crafting, a base, strange creatures and a map full of question marks. The good news is that most of it can wait. Here’s what actually matters in your first sessions, and what to keep in mind before you invest too heavily in one scenario.

Choose your server type carefully

Scenarios run on their own servers, and the first real decision is between PvE and PvP rule sets. PvE is the better starting point for almost everyone: you still share the world with other players, but you can learn systems without losing your base to raiders. Pick a server your friends are on if you plan to play together — moving later isn’t always simple.

Settle early, then improve

Your territory is where crafting stations, storage and defenses live, and it can be relocated later, so don’t overthink the first spot. Prioritise flat ground near water and a mix of resources over a scenic view. A small, functional base you can expand beats a grand plan you never finish.

Follow the unlocks, not the loot

Progression runs through unlocking new blueprints and crafting options as you level. Early on, focus on the unlocks that improve your daily loop — better storage, cooking, and resource processing — before chasing top-tier weapons. Food and water keep you healthy and fighting fit, so a steady supply saves you far more trouble than a slightly better gun.

Deviants are more than enemies

Deviants are the anomalous creatures that define Once Human. Many are hostile, but some can be contained and put to work — helping in combat, boosting production at your base or offering other utility. Pay attention to how each one behaves before you fight it; learning which are worth capturing is one of the most rewarding parts of the early game.

Know what happens when the scenario ends

Each scenario is a season with an ending. When it wraps up, most gear, resources and structures don’t come with you, while cosmetics and a limited set of items carry over. That changes how you should play: spend resources freely, experiment with builds, and don’t hoard for a future that resets. Permanent scenario servers also exist for players who prefer a world that keeps going.

Our take

Play your first scenario to learn the systems rather than to optimise them. By the time the next one starts, you’ll know exactly which unlocks and Deviants you want first. Our Once Human review covers the seasonal structure in more depth, and our PC setup guide covers what you need to run it.
